Tips for Teaching Your Kids about Fire Safety

Business

In the event of a fire, would your kids know what to do? Fire safety is not just important, it could be lifesaving. To help protect your kids from flames, you’ve installed fire sprinklers in Berkeley Heights, tested your fire alarm, and purchased a fire extinguisher. There’s more to keeping your children safe than just ensuring that your house is well-equipped, though. Here are a few things you should make sure to teach your kids.

  1. Make sure they know basic personal information. As soon as they are able to remember it, your kids should be taught their full name, address, phone number, and the names of both of their parents. In the event that they do need to call for help, it will assist emergency dispatchers in finding your home if your children can tell them the address. If your children have a hard time remembering the address, teach it to them in the form of a song or a rhyme.
  2. Teach them how and who to call in case of a fire. In the event of a fire, your children need to know who to call for help. Teach them how to unlock your cell phone and how to call 911. Make sure that they know to stay calm and speak clearly.
  3. Create a family emergency plan. In the event of a fire, your children should be able to locate 2 different escape routes. If possible, they should leave through the main entrance to the home. If it is blocked, they may need to get out through a window or another door. Sit down as a family and map out different escape routes. Then create a meeting point where the whole family will come together following a fire.
  4. Stage fire drills. While most children know what fire alarms do, many don’t know what they sound like when they go off. A few times a year, stage a fire drill. During this drill, test your fire alarms. This allows your kids to hear what they sound like. Then follow the emergency plan you have set in place. The more you practice, the easier it will be for your kids to remember in the event of a fire.
  5. Educate your kids about what to do during a fire. Fire safety contains a number of details that children need to learn to stay safe. For example, it’s important that your kids know to stop, drop, and roll if they are on fire. Should they wake up to a fire alarm, teach them to feel the door knob on their bedroom door before exiting. If it’s hot, there is a fire close and they should find a different exit. It’s a good idea to keep your mouth covered when escaping a fire and stay as low to the ground as possible. Smoke rises and this will limit the amount of it that is inhaled.
  6. Don’t let children play with fire. While it’s natural to be curious about fire, your kids should know that it’s not a toy. Teach them to never play with lighters, matches, and other flammable objects. Don’t keep lit candles in places where young children can reach them. By teaching kids to not play with fire from an early age, it decreases the chances of them playing with it later on.

From fire sprinklers in Berkeley Heights to teaching your children how to call 911, there are many different ways to keep kids protected in the event of a fire. No matter how you decide to approach the subject, it’s important that your children know how to handle the situation should a fire happen. By educating them and installing the proper safety devices, you could end up saving the lives of your loved ones.
