The Highlights of Rabat Part One

Travel & Tourism
Almohad Dynasty established Rabat, the capital of the Kingdom of Morocco, in the 12th century. They transformed it from just a Rabat, or a fortress, into a large cultural and civilization center over the Mediterranean Sea. Rabat today welcomes hundreds of tourists who travel to Morocco.

Rabat hosts some of the most magnificent historical sites that are commonly included in several travel packages to Morocco. Today we will be highlighting some of the most interesting monuments of the Moroccan capital.

No travel who tours Morocco can pass by Rabat and not visit Challah, as it is considered the most amazing historical site of the city and aplace of special magic due to its significant history and marvelous location situated on the shores of the Bou Regreg River that separates Rabat from the neighboring city of Sale.

Challah was established as early as the 6th century BC as a small town and then it witnessed many renovations and alternations in various periods of history. It became a royal necropolis and then a simple lake for fishing. The city flourished during the ruling period of Moorish as many buildings were constructed in the city. Today many travelers who tour Morocco are keen to visit Challah.

The city of Challah saw an important turning point in its history when the Romans took control of the region in 40 AD. Many constructions were added to the city including the main temple, some baths, and large fortified walls. Another stronger wall was added to the city in 144 AD before the fall of the Romans at the beginning of the 5th century. Added to many travel packages to Morocco, a visit to Challah is quite remarkable.

During the period from the 5th to the 10th century Challah was largely deserted. Afterwards the Marinid Sultan Abu Yusuf El Yaaqub made it a necropsies to burry the nobles of the Marinid dynasty. This was the beginning of a large complex that included a mosque and many other structures. Some of these establishments are still available until today and amaze travelers who spend their vacations in Morocco.

Challah today is one of the most favorite sites for tourists and locals in Rabat. People enjoy its amazing architectural elements. This is in addition to the wonderful views of the city of Rabat and the River of Bou Regreg that the town offers.

Another important historical site that are often explored by tourists who spend their holiday in Morocco is the Mausoleum of Mohamed V. Constructed in 1961, King Hassan II built a mausoleum for his father, King Mohamed V in this location near the towering minaret of Hassan.

The reason why he chose that specific location is that this was where Mohamed V carried out the Friday prayer in 1955 after he came back from an exile that remained for more than 32 years. A large number of tourists who travel to Morocco would usually pay the mausoleum a visit.

The mausoleum of Mohamed V is featured with its amazing white marble coating. This is in addition to its ceiling that is characterized with its wooden works that were all produced in the city of Meknes. There are also a number of magnificent domes and some wonderful decorations and ornaments. All tourists who travel to Morocco and pay the mausoleum a visit admire these architectural features.

Although Rabat is not as popular among tourists as cities like Marrakesh, Casablanca, Fes, and Meknes, the city welcomes hundreds of travelers who enjoy their holidays in Morocco. There are some remarkable historical sites that are recommended for any tourists who are fond of the Moroccan history and architecture.
