LED lighting is fast gaining popularity among consumers in America. According to Department of Energy estimates, over 49 million LED bulbs were installed nationwide just in 2012. It is estimated that close to 75% of lighting needs will be fulfilled by LED lamps by 2030, resulting in savings of about $30billion in today’s rates. LEDs are favored for consuming less energy when compared to traditional incandescent lamps or fluorescent lamps. They also produce less waste heat, so air conditioning bills come down. They do not contain toxic metals like mercury and are much safer for the environment. Finally, LEDs have an operating life that is over three times longer than fluorescent lamps and eight times longer than incandescent lamps. |
LEDs produce highly directional light, so they are best used for down lighting and recessed lights. However, diffuser lens can be used to produce diffused light from LEDs. They are also fully controllable with dimmers and photo sensors, so the light output can be adjusted to the ambient light in the room. The light output of LEDs is very flicker free and uniform. In office environments, badly designed lighting can reduce productivity levels. Very bright lighting induces weariness while dim lighting induces eye strain among workers. Designers also try to introduce as much ambient lighting in the room as it has a soothing effect on workers. Precisely designed LED lighting can reduce strain and improve workers’ productivity levels. Let’s take a look at the different types of LED office lighting:
LED Suspension Lighting Fixtures
LED suspension fixtures are hung from the ceiling or horizontal surfaces. They are available both for direct lighting and indirect lighting. They are available in a variety of stylish designs and add a touch of style to the functional aspect of office lighting. Suspended fixtures break the monotony of the office design and also serve as a counterpoint to the décor and furniture. You can choose from linear designs, cubed designs, round forms and spot lights. Some linear models are tiltable for adjusting the direction of the light beam. A variety of finishes like chrome, glass and aluminum are available. Inbuilt electronic dimmers are available as standard or as an extra option. They are available in Cool White and Soft White color temperatures.
Led Troffers and Panels
LED troffers are fixed into ceilings and used for down lighting purposes. Here the function gets more importance than the form as the fixture body is mostly invisible. The troffers and panels can be flush, semi-flush or recessed from the ceiling surface. A set of LED panels is used to provide uniform lighting in the room while avoiding dim spots.
LED High Bay Lighting
High bay lighting fixtures are used to illuminate high ceiling rooms like warehouses and auditoriums. The fixture must give a wide spread of bright light. The design is more robust than regular office fittings. Wide beam LEDs are used so the beam lands on a large swathe of area. LED high bay lights do not require frequent maintenance or change of lamps, so they work very well in such applications.
