Maintaining a Green Lawn in Reno Can Be Quite Challenging |

The Nevada city of Reno sits on the western border of what is called the Great Basin, with an arid climate characteristic of temperatures that range between desert and humid conditions. Of course, this can present challenges for lawn service in Reno, especially considering the variation in weather at 4,400 feet of elevation. Also, with the mostly rocky and clay-based, fast draining soil conditions, selecting the right variety of grasses is paramount to the success of any gardener. Reno only gets an average annual precipitation of 7.48 inches and most of that falls in the winter and spring months. Being in the Great Basin only further complicates matters. The Great Basin The Great Basin is one of four American deserts, but, unlike the other three, it is characterized by cold-weather vegetation, in no small part due to its elevation. In fact, Reno gets an average annual snowfall of nearly 2 feet, yet it is by far the largest arid area in the continental United States. It should come as no surprise that some of the most dominant plant species in the region include scrubs such as sage brushes, salt brushes, and winterfat, all of which do well in cold weather conditions. However, the region also contains plant species found in warmer climates but not characteristic desert plants such as cacti. What makes the climate of the Great Basin extremely challenging are the extremes in temperatures with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Daytime temperatures can hover around 90 degrees with nights followed by temperatures that can be near freezing. The Great Basin desert is the coldest of the deserts in North America and on any particular day, the weather can be quite variable. Add to the fact that the dry climate coupled with a rugged topography and soil can be too harsh for many plants, it should come as no wonder that lawn service in Reno can be a very challenging task for even the most experienced gardeners.
