From every perspective there is still this failure by governments to bring in and uphold strict labeling regulations on food packaging. Mandatory labeling laws simply don't exist, although Trans fat policies in Denmark, the Netherlands, Costa Rica, Canada and Brazil have proven highly effective in removing those killer fats from the food supply. This has been a positive step in the right direction for these countries, but nothing has changed for the better in other places. Food manufacturers are still having a free hand and are using their favorite unhealthy Trans fats. It has been universal knowledge and agreement for many years that Trans fats are damaging to our health. Food labeling can work! Anti Trans fat policies are working and proven highly effective where enforced in countries. Eliminating and removing Trans fats from processed foods is not only achievable, it is a positive step in providing public health, reducing heart failure, stroke and obesity. Don't assume the government watchdog does help and protect your safety when it comes to food labeling. This isn't a problem that will just go away; you must protect yourself. Going back some months to an article: "Food Labeling Is a Fast to Say the List" where some points been made in that article that our labeling system is totally unacceptable and imposes ongoing health risks to the public. We, the public, are still being hoodwinked! The truth, when it comes to food labeling information for the shopper, is like playing the Russian roulette, the deadly truth remains hidden from us. We don't know how much and which foods contain Trans fats because food manufacturers are not required to share this information. We understand there are small amounts of Trans fats occurring naturally in most dairy and meats that are unavoidable, but are much less harmful than those in processed foods. Eating a diet of Trans fat calories daily increases the risk of coronary heart disease by 25 percent. Eliminating industrial produced Trans fats from the food supply could prevent up to the same percentage from heart attacks, strokes and related deaths. Experts agree correct food labeling would have a positive health benefit as well as a huge reduction in cost for government health systems. It seems the logic way of thinking by governments is: Why do it the easy way if you can do it the hard way! Where does this toxic killer come from? There is nothing natural about artificial Trans fats, therefore it is unhealthy and becomes a killer. Artificial Trans fats originate from liquid oils being put through a process and made hard which becomes a partially hydrogenated fat. They used extensively in food products such as processed foods, chips, cakes, popcorn, many backed foods and some margarine's. They have no nutritional values; ultimately they increase the foods shelf life. Trans fat as most people know it becomes saturated fat because of its chemical structure. Trans fat is synthetic, artificial industrial; different oils being processed by heating where they become trans fatty acids. Avoid foods shown as hydrogenated oils or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Saturated fats are a chemical composition. They are solid at normal room temperatures and will oxidize slowly. In contrast, unsaturated fats are much less stable and more liquid at normal room temperatures and so they are more difficult to use in food productions. Healthy fats! Monounsaturated fats are found in foods such as almonds, cashews, avocados, peanuts, coconut oil and cooking oils made from plants or seeds. Polyunsaturated fats (omega 3 & 6) are important acids found in oily fish such as tuna, salmon, blue mackerel, linseed - flax seed, walnuts, sesame seed-spread, pine nuts, Brazil nuts, pecans, pistachios, sunflower and safflower oils. Omega fats are the good fatty acids and most essential for health; they cannot be produced by the body itself and it is necessary to include them in the diet. If you have long believed nuts are fatty and unhealthy, that is not so. Nuts are nutrient dense, loaded with healthy fats, high in quality vegetable protein, fiber and minerals. Regular nut consumption is unlikely to increase weight; it may even help in weight loss. Ultimately, it is important to look for the right products in food which include the good natural benefits and at the same time be aware of bad ingredients and avoid them.
