Learning your child has autism can be a devastating moment, but it can also be a relief. A diagnosis means doctors and families can begin the process of treatments and interventions instead of attempting to determine a diagnosis. Because every person with autism is different, treatments vary widely. Options for autism treatments in Salt Lake City include using medications to treat core systems and a variety of therapies designed to address specific needs related to the individual. Medicine The most successful treatments use pharmaceuticals in conjunction with other therapies. Though medication doesn’t provide a cure, it can be used to treat some symptoms of autism. For example, doctors can prescribe risperidone and aripiprazole to treat irritability. Some doctors may choose to prescribe medications like selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors to treat depression or anxiety symptoms. It’s important to remember that all medications have side effects and they won’t work for everyone. Alternative Medicine Many parents choose to use a combination of traditional and alternative treatments. Researchers estimate that between 30 and 95 percent of the parents of children with autism use complementary and alternative medicines. For example, many children with autism spectrum disorder have difficulty sleeping. Therefore, some parents choose to use melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that helps regulate sleep and wake cycles, to treat their child’s insomnia. Sleep disorders can worsen autism symptoms. Therapies Parents and doctors use a long list of therapies to support children with autism spectrum disorder. Speech-language therapy helps children with autism learn to communicate by linking speech with social use of language. Other therapies include occupational, which teaches children with autism a variety of cognitive, physical, and motor skills; sensory integration therapy, which assists children with autism in processing movement, touch, sight and sound; and physical therapy, which assists children with autism by improving motor skills. When parents learn their child has autism spectrum disorder, they begin a lifelong process in seeking autism treatments in Salt Lake City and elsewhere.
