The science behind childhood development, autism, and education can be complicated and exhausting to analyze. It takes a lot of time to investigate, and a tremendous amount of effort to study and stay on top of new developments. But that doesn't mean it has to be confusing for parents or families. If you have a child with autism, you're likely already curious about autism research and treatment in Salt Lake City. You've probably done a lot of reading on your own already. For anyone not familiar with the basics, here's some initial insight for you. Curriculum The child's curriculum should address a broad range of developmental areas with the goal of preparing young children for kindergarten, where they should be able to enter into the least restrictive environment and be able to interact with their peers and siblings. The curriculum and educational strategies should be individualized for each child and be based on Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), an acronym that you've likely seen many times before. Pre-vocational, vocational, and education and behavioral treatments and therapies are essential. Community integration (being able to interact with and communicate with peers, parents, teachers, etc.) and functional adaptive skills (being able to adjust and adapt to new environments, both social and otherwise, as well as problem-solving skills, etc.) are key. Individualized for Each Child What does all of this mean for you and your child? This means that scheduling, learning prompts, visual supports and cues will all be used as part of this process. All of the necessary data will be collected and analyzed, so that each child can have their own individualized programming. Each child is different, and your child will not be expected to follow any sort of preplanned, cookie-cutter routine. Parent training will be part of the process as well. You'll be expected to learn effective Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) teaching techniques, and you will learn how to handle severely challenging behaviors. As you probably already know, consistency is key. It's not just a matter of keeping to a schedule, but the methodology must also be consistent and regulated. Reliable behavior requires reliable patterns and feedback. In order for your child to achieve their highest skill level and potential, it's not enough that they attend a few classes or have a few lessons. Both autism research and treatment in Salt Lake City are part of an ongoing process. The more you learn and the more you know, the more you can play an instrumental role in your child's education, development, and success.
