SEO has many different components, some on-site and some off-site. A great place to begin your search engine optimization, which can have a big impact, is building good title tags. What is the Title Tag? The title tag is important when constructing your webpages. It is the clickable link that appears on a search engine results page. You will also see the tag in the top left hand corner of your browser when you are on your website. The title tag is in your page's source code and is located in the head of the document. Basically it contains the title of the website and is important because when the search engines look at it they will know what the page is all about. What to include in a Title Tag: Website owners frequently overlook title tag keyword phrases. Words that you want your webpage to rank high for, the keywords you are targeting, should be included in the tag. Remember to use only keyword phrases that are relevant for that specific page and do not use a list of single keywords. Your title tag needs to contain keywords but it should make sense and be readable. Lists of keywords will give the appearance of something that has been done to attract search engines and not users, when a search engine sees that it will rank the site poorly. Do not use commas in your title tags instead use the pipe separator " " or a hyphen "-", even a colon ":" is better than a comma. You can play around with it and see what you think looks best, or you can look at other sites from businesses in your industry and see what they have done with their titles. You also want your title to be descriptive. When the search engines put your title in the description of search results the title tag should be a good representation of what your site is about so people will click on it. Your title should include your primary keyword for that page, a geographic modifier, perhaps a secondary keyword, and the company name. The main keyword should probably be the first thing in your title. Following that should be the smallest geographic area where you get the majority of your business from, this might be your state, county, or city for example. Include the company name at the end, unless it is a well known name. If people aren't familiar with your business then they probably aren't searching for it online instead they will more likely be searching for the keywords in your title so put more emphasis there. You want to keep your title tag to 8 words or less with a max of 65 characters, that isn't much so use it wisely. You can use over 100 characters, however, the search engines results page will only show the first 65 characters so it isn't helpful to use a longer title. Other Title Tag Tips: Each title tag on each web page of your site should be unique. When several pages have the identical tag Google does not rank those pages well, it assumes those pages aren't significant or important. The title should be written just as you would write a title for a PPC campaign. When a potential customer is looking through the search engine results you have to have a good enough title to grab their attention and make them click through to your site. This tag is just as important as the title you write for an article or a PPC ad. Great title tags put you one step closer to great search engine rankings.
