In today’s litigious society, anyone can sue anyone for anything. That doesn’t necessarily mean the person who decides to sue will have a case, but it does mean many well-meaning people end up needing the assistance of Stephenville lawyers. Here are some wacky legal cases that suggest needing a lawyer may just be a fact of modern life. Turtle Defense A Florida woman stabbed her boyfriend after he threatened to harm her pet turtle. She faced aggravated battery charges. However, her defense claimed she stabbed her boyfriend to protect others. While “defense of others” is a reasonable defense for harming someone, it typically only applies to the imminent danger of other humans. Coffee Shorts Famed coffeemakers, Starbucks, are in hot water after consumers sued saying their lattes were shorting customers of about 25 percent of the coffee and milk they should have received. The consumers argued that by having baristas fill latte cups to a prescribed fill line rather than to the top of the cup, the coffee giant was shorting customers. Starbucks has also been sued for overfilling its iced lattes with ice. Pastafarians A judge threw out one Nebraska inmate’s religious liberty case. The inmate claimed that prison officials did not make suitable accommodations for his Pastafarian faith. Pastafarians belong to the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Prison guards did not allow the prisoner to wear a colander on his head--a symbol of his religious exercise. Bridal Theft A California woman was sent to jail for showing up to weddings uninvited and stealing the happy couples’ wedding loot. According to court papers, the woman stole credit cards, thousands of dollars’ worth of gift cards, and cash. Though she plead guilty in San Diego County, California, authorities in other California counties are seeking her extradition. She faces up to 11 felony counts in Riverside as well. Odd and unusual court cases are a common occurrence in modern society, keeping Stephenville lawyers busy.
