There are many reasons people choose window treatments but it’s common for people to think only of how they’ll make a room look. The truth is that though the style of window treatments is important, there’s a lot more you’ll get out of using the right window coverings. Jan Zimmer writes, “Window treatments play an important role in the design of a room by adding softness to the hard edges of the room, offering privacy and managing light control. Window treatments can hide a room’s defects or play up its charms; they can shield an unattractive view or make up for a lack of privacy. Each element in the interior should work together to make the room a whole without being overwhelming or taking center stage. Careful planning is especially true for window treatments. The secret to a well-planned window is to select the proper style treatment for the setting and functionality, using a great fabric or two that pulls the whole room together. When selecting the best fabric for the job, in addition to the color, also consider the pattern, texture and the characteristics of the fiber as well as its durability. After choosing your fabric, select the lining carefully. Be sure to use lining that is the same kind of fiber and weight as the face fabric. For example, if your face fabric is a natural fiber, such as silk, or synthetic like a poly-cotton blend, choosing a lining in the same fiber allows it to hang properly. Use interlining for a further enhanced professional finish. Interlining, a material resembling flannel, is inserted between the face fabric and the lining. There are multiple purposes of interlining: it protects the face fabric from the sun, prevents bleed through, provides a luxurious look and feel by adding body and adds insulation. Bleed through is when the sun shines through the window treatment washing out the color. If you invest in this extra step, you won’t be disappointed with the beauty that interlining adds to the project. The current trend is to keep the fabric treatments stacked off the window glass when they are open. To give them the proper fullness when closed, the rule of thumb is to make the panels 2½ to 3 times the width of the window. If you want your treatments to stack completely off the window, make sure the curtain rod is a third larger than the window width.” Across the board, we agree with Zimmer’s ideas.
