Most raw metals with the exception of precious metals will very easily oxidize and corrode over the course of time if they become exposed to different environmental conditions and corrosive applications. The best way to design any component therefore starts with surface engineering evaluation in order to make sure that the end product is going to function reliably throughout its intended service life. It doesn’t matter small a service application looks, corrosion has the capacity to bring serious functional issues and shortfalls. NADCAP metal finishing allows for different practical ways to protects metals and components from the effects of corrosion and rusting. Electroless nickel plating is one of the most modern ways to provide metals with a robust solution to attack from corrosion across a wide range of corrosive mechanisms such as erosion, chemical attack and galvanic corrosion. NADCAP metal finishing companies will apply electroless nickel plating to a wide array of metals such as aluminum and brass alloys, copper and steel. Currently, electroless nickel plating is used as a way for promoting corrosion resistance across a wide range of industries such as oil and gas, heavy equipment, marine, automotive, railway and transmission and distribution among others. Electroless nickel plating is completely different from electrolytic nickel plating since there is usually no need of external source of electrons for the deposition. This is an auto-catalytic process that doesn’t need to pass en electric current through the parts in order to form the desired plated deposit. The result is the electroless nickel plating does a deposit that is uniformly deposited as opposed to the electrolytic process. It is this improved uniformity of the electroless plating process that is the main property that improves corrosion resistance to each and every feature of a component especially where a component has features that are usually difficult to coat; think about areas going through holes or counter bores. There is yet another positive benefit of the electroless nickel plating process in that the nickel will also deposit different amounts of phosphorous ranging from 4-13% depending on the type of bath. Take not that the level of phosphorous will have an impact on the key deposit properties including ductility, corrosion resistance and hardness. Apart from that, the post-plate heat treatment may also be used to change the structure of the electroless nickel plating so as to increase its hardness to the higher limit of up to 70 RC. Depending on your industry, you want to ensure that the components that you are using have been made using the highest level of corrosion performance such as electroless nickel plating. You may choose between medium phosphorus electroless nickel plating and high phosphorous electroless nickel plating.
