For many investors in St Lucia real estate, living the Caribbean lifestyle is part of the package – and that means socialising with the locals, absorbing island traditions and joining in celebrations whenever you have the opportunity. One of my favourite nights out is a trip to the gorgeous fishing village of Anse la Raye, which is very convenient to get to for any St Lucia real estate owners of properties on this side of the island. Every Friday, this place comes alive to honour a local tradition that has been on the go for many years: Anse La Raye Fish Friday. Anse La Raye This usually quiet, but rather charming little town is one that is often overlooked by people passing by, unless of course it is Friday. I would recommend taking the family during the day too though, as the beach is the ideal spot for a pleasant stroll and the friendly locals make you feel very welcome. Picture-postcard scenes of colourful fishing boats greet you and you get a real sense of true island life. Once the sun sets however, this serene little town begins to pulsate with energy. Food vendors appear on the streets with huge oil drum barbeques, there are loud speakers booming out music, and people begin to the line the streets as the day’s fresh catch is brought up to be cooked. 7pm Start Luckily for families with young kids, the party starts relatively early at 7pm, but by all means come earlier and soak up the atmosphere while all the preparations are taking place. The quantity, variety and quality of the fish here always amazes me. For St Lucia real estate owners with kids who are desperate to experience the true Caribbean vibe, then get them tasting scallops, shrimp, crab cakes, snapper and even fish guts! You can enjoy your fish with macaroni pie, baked potatoes, and plantain or Johnny cakes. Some Tips Although prices are reasonable, I would always suggest confirming your price before you order. Sometimes a local, asking you to take their photograph, will approach you. While this might seem completely harmless, be aware that you may well be asked for a tip afterwards. It is perfectly acceptable to just say no in the first place. This event is very family-oriented and generally very safe, but be aware that it is a party. The music gets louder as people enjoy more rum and get a little rowdier themselves. If you have very young kids, you might just want to stay for an hour or two. The street is not huge so you shouldn’t lose each other and you are likely to bump into other St Lucia real estate owners enjoying the fun too. It is a great opportunity to socialise and perhaps meet new friends. The event usually rounds up around 2am but most people leave by 10pm, which is a good time to finish up if you have children.
