15 Things You Didn't Know about Tobacco

Business

Smoking has come a long way throughout the years. What once started out as a religious and social ritual has now become a billion-dollar industry. Whether you enjoy rolling your own cigarettes or looking for interesting water pipes for sale in Denver, Colorado, take a look at a few interesting facts about one of America’s most famous industries.

  • Cigarettes are traded more than anything else. Globally, there are more than 1 trillion cigarettes being sold between countries each year. This totals over $400 billion dollars in sales.
  • The cork tip on the end of cigarettes was invented in 1925. A Hungarian inventor named Boris Aivaz patented the process by making it out of crepe paper. He originally set out to create a filter out of various materials. Eventually crepe paper was found to be the best option. While cork wasn’t originally used, it most likely got its name due to its similar appearance to the material.
  • In most countries, you can legally purchase tobacco at the age of 18. In Japan, however, you have to be 20 years old. In the United States, the age requirement is 19 years old.
  • The World Health Organization estimates that almost 25% of cigarettes that are sold globally are actually smuggled.
  • Eggplant contains nicotine. To get the same buzz as a cigarette, you would have to consume 20 pounds of eggplant.
  • In China, 2.2 trillion cigarettes are smoked each year. 400 billion of those are fake cigarettes manufactured in illegal factories located underground.
  • Due to negotiations termed in the Geneva Convention, every POW should have access to tobacco.
  • When tobacco was first introduced to Europe, the man first carrying it was imprisoned in Spain by the Spanish Inquisition. Those who kept him imprisoned believed that only the Devil could give man the power to breathe smoke through his nose and mouth. Eventually they released him and tobacco gained popularity with the masses.
  • The way you smoke has different effects on your body. Short, quick puffs leave you feeling stimulated and alert while deep, smooth breaths bring a calming and sedative affect.
  • The Perique tobacco used in American Spirit Black cigarettes is farmed on 16 acres of land in Louisiana. Most of the farming is done by only one man.
  • The youngest smoker, named Aldi Rizal, used to smoke 40 cigarettes per day. This Indonesian toddler started smoking at the tender age of 18 months.
  • Brazilians first started smoking by rolling tobacco leaves in paper and igniting them.
  • Tobacco was offered as part of the soldier’s rations during World War I and World War II.
  • There are over 120 countries that grow tobacco to be sold commercially.
  • Tobacco can be snuffed, chewed, and smoked.

Whether you enjoy looking for corn cob pipes or water pipes for sale in Denver, Colorado, smoking is a great way to get your tobacco fix. Don’t forget to clean your pipe regularly and only use quality tobacco to better the taste of your smoke and improve your experience.
