Cleanrooms are essential to specific manufacturing groups, particularly pharmaceuticals, that are creating and packaging environmentally sensitive substances. What classifies a cleanroom in part is that it utilizes HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) purifiers and other specifically designed cleanroom filters & supplies to keep as many foreign particles out of the cleanroom as possible, including any that might be brought into the room by workers. HEPA Filters HEPA filters are primarily utilized as cleanroom filters, although they vary in size from the size of a fist to the height of the old fashioned computers when they were the size of washing machines. There’s at least one outer filter that blocks larger particles like hair and dust, and inside of that outer filter is what looks like an accordion filter scrunched together, sometimes in a circle. At a higher speed, particles will get stuck to this inner filter either by directly attaching to these fibers or by indirectly getting attached to other dirt and dust particles that are already clinging to the fibers. When the air pressure is lower in the filters, a technique usually employed whenever the cleanroom isn’t being actively used to maintain cleanroom status and avoid overuse of energy, the particles will float more freely inside of the filters but will still successfully attach themselves. Cleaning and Replacing Filters Depending on how long these filters have been in use, they need to be cleaned or disposed of regularly enough to maintain acceptable cleanroom standards. If the power goes off for some reason and air ceases to blow through the filters, they are rendered ineffective until their filters are replaced because in stagnant air dust particles will attract to and settle on the outer fibers of the filters instead of within them, contaminating the system. The use of objects like tacky mats, which individuals will walk on to pull particles off their shoes, are other useful pieces of equipment that help maintain cleanroom status while limiting the contaminates in the room that are required to pass through the filtration system. The use of cleanroom filters & supplies are essential to maintaining a controlled environment.
