Debunking 6 Myths about Botox

Fashion & Cosmetics

Considering Botox in Boston but don’t know what to believe about the procedure and the end results? Read on to separate fact from fiction where Botox is concerned.

Myth 1 – My Face Will Be Frozen

Many of the myths that develop around Botox originate from Hollywood horror stories of stars that go overboard with plastic surgery. Botox will not, in fact, make your face expressionless. The goal is to erase major wrinkles, such as the brow furrow that presents when you’re angry. Relaxing the muscle to eradicate the furrow will not leave your entire face immobile or incapable of expression.

Myth 2 – Botox Can Be Used to Plump My Lips

Oftentimes people think Botox and dermal fillers are one and the same. Botox is an agent used to relax muscles, which then erases the wrinkles. Dermal fillers are used to inject volume into tissue, such as giving lips a full, plump look.

Myth 3 – Botox Can Erase All of My Wrinkles

Wouldn’t it be lovely if there were a cure-all for wrinkles? Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Botox treats what are known as dynamic wrinkles. These wrinkles are caused by movement and are treated by relaxing the muscle. The other type of wrinkle is known as a static wrinkle. These wrinkles are caused by sun exposure and are a natural result of aging. Because these are not caused by muscle movement, Botox is ineffective to treat them. However, they can be smoothed out with cosmetic fillers.

Myth 4 – Botox Is Purely Cosmetic

Actually, Botox was used to treat certain medical conditions well over a decade before it was approved for cosmetic use. It has been used in the treatment of migraine headaches, excessive underarm sweating, and overactive bladders, just to name a few.

Myth 5 – Botox Is Painful

The needle used for injections is so thin, patients report hardly feeling it. For those that are particularly sensitive to injections, a topical anesthetic can be used.

Myth 6 – Everyone Will Know I’ve Had Botox

This is another myth perpetrated by Hollywood and tabloid magazines, but again is a cautionary tale toward too much plastic surgery, and it has nothing to do with a standard Botox procedure. If you were to get Botox injections over your lunch hour, your coworkers would be none the wiser upon your return. That is because Botox usually doesn’t require any downtime, and it takes 3 to 5 days for the injection to start working. It will be a full 7 to 10 days before maximum results are achieved. Therefore, the result is gradual and won’t immediately alter your appearance in a drastic way.

There are many myths surrounding Botox that, frankly, have very little truth to them. Botox in Boston is a safe, effective way to treat wrinkles. Schedule a complimentary consultation to address your concerns and find out how Botox can enhance your appearance.
