As one of the leading providers of Supply Chain Apprenticeships in the country, we believe that anything that encourages and helps people to begin an apprenticeship of any kind is greatly beneficial in a myriad of ways. Sadly, one of the factors that often prevents people from even beginning the application process is a lack of accessibility in their desired field of work– often on account of their learning disability. The pleasing news broke several months ago that to help tackle this, the government had announced the creation of a new taskforce, with the intention of assisting more people with learning disabilities to access apprenticeships. This taskforce is part of the government’s larger goal to create three million apprenticeships by 2020, and to halve the disability employment gap. Empowering more people to enter the world of work A meagre 6% of people with learning disabilities are currently in employment. As many of us know, apprenticeships are the ideal way for those of a wide range of abilities to enter the world of work. Entry requirements are low, apprentices can learn while they earn, and they will have progressed further up the career ladder on the completion of their apprenticeship, regardless of where they subsequently choose to work. The taskforce has already met several times throughout the past few months; once to identify issues, then to discuss solutions and finally to establish what recommendations can be made to ministers. Skills Minister Nick Boles commented: "Our commitment to apprenticeships is giving people everywhere the chance to develop vital skills while working in a real job and being paid. This taskforce will focus on how apprenticeships can be more accessible to people with learning disabilities so everyone can be part of the apprenticeships success story." Expanding opportunity to help reduce the disability employment gap The planned boost in access to apprenticeships is set to benefit not only those who are currently searching for one, but also employers struggling to find suitable candidates.
