In my opinion, winter sun holidays are just as important as summer vacations. For families seeking disabled access holidays, I always like to recommend the Canaries. In addition to being spectacular islands, there are also a handful of amazing hotels which are highly accessible and family friendly. Be sure to book early, as many become fully booked quickly! 1. Jardines de Nivaria, Costa Adeje, Tenerife Tenerife’s Jardines de Nivaria is a wonderful 5-star hotel which is also perfectly located. It has a beachfront location and is just a few minutes’ walk from the Puerto Colón Marina, whilst the hotel features pristine gardens which are ideal for relaxing in. There are two large swimming pools, a spa and 4 on-site restaurants. The Jardines de Nivaria is famous for its fabulous food and ensures that you do not have to travel far for a delicious meal. The building and surrounding gardens are all highly accessible and the staff will assist in any way they can. 2. Hotel Princesa Yaiza, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote If Lanzarote is your destination, then I highly recommend checking into this fantastic hotel. Another 5-star beachfront property, there is 300m of gorgeous white sand on the doorstep. The hotel itself has large suites available which come with an independent living room, satellite TV and separated bath and shower. It is highly accessible throughout, with wheel-in showers, toilet raisers and shower seats. There are swimming pools, a whirlpool, playgrounds, leisure area, therapy centre, 3 restaurants and 2 bars. 3. Hard Rock Hotel, Tenerife Although it does not open until October, I had to include the Hard Rock Hotel as it will be an incredible place and ideal for families with a disabled child. The beachfront resort features two epic towers, aptly named Oasis and Nirvana, plus 3 beautiful swimming pools, a lagoon, spa and kids club. There will be 16 wheelchair adapted rooms, each with luxury amenities and there are also superb dining and entertainment options. Additionally, Hard Rock are known for their commitment to facilitating accessibility, so families on accessible holidays are always well looked after. 4. Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa, Meloneras, Gran Canaria This is a 4-star hotel, but, in my opinion, it is right up there with its 5-star competitors. The Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa is well situated; being a short walk to the beach and dunes park, with the shopping centre also close. The resort has spacious double rooms with everything you need for a comfortable stay, plus excellent facilities which include a selection of swimming pools, a solarium with Jacuzzis, tennis courts, French bowls, a gorgeous garden area and a superb entertainment programme. A few different restaurants and bars allow for varied and tasty meals throughout the day. The rooms have toilet raisers, roll-in showers, and baths with low showers and grab rails. The pools are easily accessed thanks to a brilliantly designed hoist and swivel chair system. 5. Roca Nivaria Gran Hotel, Playa Paraiso, Tenerife This 5-star resort, looking out on the quiet and luxurious Paradise Beach, allows for breathtaking ocean views from the spacious wheelchair adapted rooms. Amenities such as bars, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues are just 100m away, plus there are two huge swimming pools, seafront gardens, a spa, TV and games room and poolside bar. A key pulling factor for families are the magnificent sports facilities, with tennis courts, a paddle court, giant chess, archery and beach volleyball. The entire resort has good access, with the pool areas ramped and the bathrooms utilising roll-in showers. The approachable staff are also on hand to assist if needed. These are my top 5 accessible family-friendly hotels in the Canaries; by checking into any of these, you and your offspring are sure to have a wonderful and stress-free holiday.
