How to Master the Parallel Park

Advice,Automotive,Consumer
New drivers must be able to demonstrate their ability behind the wheel on the road, in enclosed spaces and by performing manoeuvres such as the turn in the road, parallel-park, bay-park and the reverse around a corner. Fortunately, I work with a professional driving school that has helped more than one thousand pupils pass their driving tests first time. This article will talk you through how to master the parallel park specifically.

Through-out the routine, you will use a number of professional driving techniques. However, before you start to attempt the manoeuvre you will need to prepare the vehicle and make a number of observations. You will need to check that it is clear by looking from left to right, covering every visible spot and blind spot. Starting with your left shoulder, make the clockwise observations and finish at your right shoulder.

Your driving instructor should have gone through the observation procedure with you on one of your very first driving lessons.

Now that you have made your observations and prepared the car, you just need to check your interior mirror one last time. If there is no vehicle or pedestrian behind you as you approach your preferred space, you can turn on your signal and begin to slow the vehicle down smoothly until you come to a stop next to the vehicle in front of your parallel space.

Our driving lessons in Nottingham are completed by experienced driving instructors that complete these tasks on a daily basis. It is important to listen to any advice they offer as it will only become a benefit whilst you are learning to drive. You can also take on this advice when you pass your test, making you a better driver.

Before you begin parking the car, check your mirrors one more time and put the car into reverse. By this point your reverse lights will have come on so you can cancel the signal. Any cars behind will see the reverse lights and know your intentions.

Get the car at the biting point and release the handbrake to begin moving backwards. However, make sure that you do not release the clutch too quickly or hold it too high. By doing so, you may shoot back quickly and cause an accident. When your boot is in line with the car you are parallel to, turn your steering wheel one full turn to the left. At this point you can slow down and make some more observations to ensure that it is safe to continue the park.

Keep reversing the vehicle nice and slowly so you are in complete control of the vehicle, making regular checks. When you see a triangle shape appear in your left mirror, turn your wheel one full turn to the right and continue moving the vehicle.

Now the car will start to swing into the space, make sure that you are still moving, but slowly. Check the car mirrors again and if there are any other cars approaching, stop the car and apply the handbrake. Remember that it is not your right of way and you must give way to other road users.

If there is no traffic, you can continue your manoeuvre. Towards the end of the park, you may need to adjust your steering wheel again, just ever so slightly to the left so the car finishes in a straight line. If you are still moving backwards, keep making the observations. Remember that in real life, you may be parking in a tight space and there could be pedestrians walking between spaces. Now that you are happy with your park, secure the vehicle and the manoeuvre is complete.
