In June, the British electorate made the historic decision to leave the European Union. Although the process of triggering Article 50 will not begin until the start of next year, some analysts have warned thatthe economy and job prospects in the UK could be under threat. Here at BiS Henderson Academy, we are confident that the Logistics Apprenticeships offered by businesses across the United Kingdom will continue to serve employers and industry well long into the future. However, we have rounded up some of the key information that we know about Brexit and apprenticeships so far. Resilience needed in a time of uncertainty Last year, the government pledged to launch three million apprenticeships by the end of the decade, highlighting the strength of the scheme and the government’s willingness to invest in the future of young people across our nation. Given that apprenticeships are a practical way for employers to equip new recruits and existing staff with the skills needed to helpindustry thrive, we believe it’s essential to develop and expand the training and apprenticeships offered to young people, especially helping organisations to stay on top of any worries that Brexit may bring. Questions over future funding According to Labour MP Alan Johnson, approximately 50,000 manufacturing apprenticeships in the UK are dependent on exports to the EU. Should Britain opt out of the free movement of labour within Europe, it is thought that a boost in level three apprenticeship numbers will be needed. However, achieving such an increase is also dependent on being able to fund it, about which there are also pressing questions. The European Social Fund (ESF) is distributed by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA) on the UK government's behalf. In 2015/16, this enabled 107 providers - including colleges and independent training providers - to benefit from collective funding of over £305 million. The structure of apprenticeship funding may well change as a result of Brexit. However,BiS Henderson Academy is determined to support you through any changes and help maximise any funding available to you. In turn, we hope to do our bit to help provide a stable future forapprenticeships and inspire a new generation of logistics professionals. If you would like to discuss apprenticeships, whether as an employer or prospective apprentice, please contact our friendly team here at BiS Henderson Academy today.
