Not only is Newbury, Berkshire a town, but also a civil parish located in England. Located on the Kennet and Avon Canal, and River Kennet. Many buildings in town date back to the seventeenth century. Best known for that racecourse that is located in town and the once airbase Greenham Common. Though as a town, in general the population is medium. However, many close towns make that population a bit larger. This location is one that has several retail and commercial manufacturers. The canal and River flow into town center, and two other rivers form boundaries along the south and north parts of town. Also on three sides of town, you will find some of the most beautiful scenery. That is because the North Wessex Downs is located on those north, south and west sides of the town. Another wonderful location is looking down into the river valley to the south of town. With the many ways of access via the water, this town has been important in trade in the past. Overall, the market town has been around for quite a long time. Possibly early settlers were here around the Mesolithic times. It is thought that around the eleventh century the Normans would form a borough in this location. Possibly a bit early, though under another name according to the Doomsday Survey. Nevertheless, it is more surely that the manor of Ulvritone would be the first major settlement. During the past the location of Newbury Berkshire would deal in the trade of cloth. It is possible that the first factory for clothing was placed here too. Producing a gentlemen's suite that was the best of the time. Also the location of some major battles during the English Civil War. During those battles, Donnington Castle would be ruined. The Civil War would also be detrimental to that cloth industry that had once prospered in town. Many famous people have lived in this location of Newbury - Berkshire in the past. Some that you may know are Michael Bond; he is the man behind that cute character Paddington Bear. Or even George Dangerfield who is an author and journalist. As of now there are also the likes of George Michael and also the likes of Sir Frank Williams who also both live close to the area in which the market town is based.
