Cabinet doors are typically solid hardwood, but sometimes consist of compressed wood parts for paint grade finishes. There are many styles of cabinet doors in addition to the many different wood species and finishes. The three main types of cabinet doors are a solid 1-piece slab doors or 5-piece raised and recessed panels. The raised panels are mainly used for more traditional styles and the recessed panel or solid 1-piece slab panels for more modern styles. Cabinet doors are usually 5-piece construction consisting of a frame and a floating panel, raised or recessed, to allow for expansion and contraction. The top and bottom pieces of the frame are the rails and the sides are the stiles. Most cabinet door frames are a butt joint or cope and stick construction; however mitered frames that have a 45 degree cut on the corners are an upgraded option and have a more modern style detail. There are many different details that can be applied to the perimeter of the frame and around the panel. There are also raised and inset moldings that can be incorporated for a more traditional style. The square frame with a flat panel or shaker style has become more and more popular. Cabinet doors are usually hinged with concealed self-closing and adjustable hinges or there are surface mounted hinge options for a more traditional or furniture look, especially with the barrel type hinges. There are many levels of quality in hinges as well as features. The soft-close feature has become very popular. We typically include soft close hinges with most of our cabinetry and recommend Blum as they are the leader in their industry. Lastly, the finish of the cabinet doors can be painted, stained or laminated. The sheen can be flat to high gloss. White seems to be the most popular choice these days and we also can apply glazing over any finish to create a distressed or antique appearance. There are many different types of materials that can be applied, but I will need to write about that in another newsletter or feel free to contact me anytime should you have any questions.
