Water skiing is a fun, challenging water sport. It can be a little intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, water skiing is super fun! Go Outside the Wake This is the foundational water ski trick. Master this, and then you can advance to the big doozies. Press down on the ski in the direction you want to go, right for right, left for left. Turn your body just a little as you press down, pointing yourself outside the wake. Be careful not to linger too long and get caught up in it! Cross the Wakes Alright, so you’re outside the wake. As the boat is making a slow turn, how about you swing back around and cross over both of the wakes using the inertia? This can turn into a fun back-and-forth game, as you keep yourself up against the wake, and, depending on who’s driving the boat, they might throw you a few doozy turns to really challenge your balance. Jumping There’s a simple, natural way to do ski jumping by gathering up enough speed as you plow across the wakes. If you bend your knees into the wake just right, you’ll pick up some air. These days, there are a lot of portable floating jumps that you can acquire to use for more intense ski jumping. Set yourself up a course and go for it! This is going to require much more balance and strength than the simple wake jumping, though, so don’t attempt this type without the proper head gear. It’s good to consult someone who’s done it before, as well. Drop a Ski This is the beginning of a style known as slalom skiing. Wiggle free from one ski and put your free foot on the same ski, just behind your other foot. Consider it a kind of mini-water boarding, because that’s how your movements will change. The only caveat is, don’t lose track of the ski you leave behind! Take off on One Ski This little trick takes some big energy, effort, and a whole lot of balance. Practice makes better! Instead of taking off from the water on two skis, try to balance and create enough tension with your arms and legs on just the one ski. You’ll probably land yourself straight down into the water a few times to achieve it. Or you can try taking off from a dock by sitting on the edge while the boat starts up and gathers a little bit of speed first. The sport of water skiing is a tricky, temperamental, and exciting one. It takes a little time and plenty of muscle strength to aid that balance for someone to be a successful water skier.
