There are countless varieties when it comes to everyone’s favourite beverage- tea. While most of the teas are conventional loose leaf or tea bags, there are some bizarre teas that are grown around the world. Some stem from years of culture, while others are created in a bid to make consumers happy and to keep them from getting bored with their teas. Here are some of the absurd teas from around the world: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea: Created mostly to beat the cold on high altitudes, this greyish-purple tea takes half a day to prepare. The tea leaves are boiled for hours and then Yak butter is added to it along with some salt. Shaken to the consistency of oil, this tea is served in bowls and is said to provide energy and prevent chapped lips. Insect Feces Tea: As weird as the name sounds, this tea is listed among the most expensive teas in the world. Said to cost as much as gold, this tea is made from the poop of little bugs that live on tea leaves and feed exclusively on them. The tea is tediously harvested with magnifying glasses and tweezers making it labour intensive and hence, expensive. Panda Dung Tea: Loose leaf tea leaves grown on the mountain of Ya’an are fertilised using panda excrement. While this may seem like a cost effective fertiliser, the endangered animal’s dung is actually quite expensive making the tea almost as expensive as white truffle. Labrador Tea: This Canadian tea is not actually harvested from the Camilla sineses plant and is therefore classified as a tisane. It is made with plants in the Rhododendron family and is known to cure ailments such as colds, heartburn, and hangovers. However, this tea comes with its dangers as it contains ledol- a poisonous substance that can lead to delirim, cramps, and even paralysis. Consult a doctor before you drink some! Kukicha Green Tea: A unique tea without any tea leaves! This Japanese tea is actually produced using only the stems, stalks, and twigs of the tea plant. It contains a negligible amount of caffeine, making it a popular children’s drink too. Garlic Tea: Garlic tea is known to promote high metabolism assisting in weight loss. A popular drink among celebrities, this tea also helps avoid heart problems and regularises blood pressure. Salvia Tea: Made from salvia herb, this tea is an integral part of Mexican culture and rituals. Mazatec shamans, native to Sierra Mazateca in the state of Oaxaca, consume this drink to induce visions during rituals. As the brew is made up of hallucinogenic substances, salvia remains the main choice. Kombucha Tea: This Russian drink is a strong fermented black tea that claims to strengthen the body’s immune system. Bacteria and yeast are introduced during the fermentation process, making it a bizarre tea indeed!
