There are many different ways to highlight wood in interior design. It can be used as planks on the floor or carved for table or chair legs. Exotic wood slabs are a great way to further highlight beautiful pieces. But many Americans are not familiar with wood slabs. What Are Wood Slabs? A wood slab is any large, thick piece of wood. Because the piece is so thick, it is often cut from the center of a tree. This highlights the heart wood and grain pattern of the piece. There are two different types of slabs. Live edge, or natural edge, slabs are milled with the outer edge of the tree still attached. The bark edge is highlighted with the rest of the tree to give the piece a natural look. A cut edge is like other lumber, with the bark edge cut off and the edge squared to the face of the board. Species of Woods Wood slabs are often found in the same species of wood that are available for other craft woods. Because of their size, slabs can be quite a bit more expensive, even for common woods like Pine or Poplar. That is because the grain patterns that most Americans look for come from older trees that take a while to develop. Some of the more common domestic species are Maple, Oak, or Cherry; while Bubinga, Ebony, and Koa are some exotic species. Uses for Wood Slabs Wood slabs can be used for anything that requires a large piece of flat wood. Counters or tables are two common uses for slabs. These are often made from Oak or Poplar and sealed with a food grade sealer. Benches or shelves can be made from Mahogany or an exotic like Koa to highlight the patterns of the wood. Whether common or exotic wood slabs, there are many unique ways to create a wow factor in a room. The slabs can be used as furniture or even as a focal point on the wall.
