The man or woman in a hard hat carrying around a clipboard and a phone on a construction site may not seem to be doing any work, but chances are that busy worker without any tools is one of the most important staff members on any work site—the general contractor. So what exactly does a general contractor do and why do people hire them? In short, they build things. They may specialize as commercial building contractors in North Carolina or in residential construction of dream homes somewhere else, but no matter the worksite, the general contractor job is one of the most important in any project. Here is a bit of information about what a general contractor does and why people hire them. Big Picture Thinkers For large projects—like a commercial building, a stadium, or even a residential home—the general contractor will be the big picture thinker. While there will likely be a number of workers who do the electrical work or the framing, the general contractor is responsible for ensuring that the individual parts of the whole are completed in the right order, in the right way to fit with every other individual piece of a project. Staff Hiring Most general contractors will hire a variety of specialists to complete certain tasks related to a larger project. So, a general contractor may hire a plumber to do the plumbing, and an electrician to do the electrical work. These subcontractors typically do their jobs and leave. They don’t see the entire project through to completion; they simply do their own part and move on to the next job. The best general contractors work well with a variety of different people to ensure that the entire job is finished on time and preferably under-budget. Security Commercial building contractors in North Carolina may not specialize in the small details, but they provide peace of mind for the company or individual wanting to build a project. The general contractor visits the site, keeps things moving and ultimately, provides peace of mind for the individual or company who hired him.
