Deterring Your Home from Pests

Business

Whether it's ants, termites, rats, or other small animals, nobody likes having their home invaded by unwanted creatures. Pests can severely detract from your enjoyment of your home and spread diseases to you and your family, causing real problems for the entire household. It can seem almost impossible to defend your home from pests, but there are a few things that you can do in order to protect your home as best as you can. Here are a few tips to try to keep pests out!

Don't Leave Food Out

This should be a fairly obvious part of Weymouth pest control, but many people forget about this basic step. The smell of food from your trash and from your counter is a great attractant for ants and roaches. If you've got ants attracted to your food, it can be a real problem because the ants will be taking food back to their colony to feed their queen.

Why is that a problem? The queen can produce 300,000 eggs every single day of her life. If the queen is being fed, the ant colony continues to grow, and there's no way that you can take out the colony as long as the queen is alive. Once one ant finds food, it lets other worker ants know about a source of food, and the cycle continues for as long as the colony is able to thrive. The best way to prevent such a situation is to keep ants from discovering a food source that they can take back to the queen. Make sure that you promptly dispose of food waste by either disposing your garbage in the trash can, in the garbage disposal, or washing it off in the dishwasher as appropriate.

Don't Leave Doors or Windows Open

The easiest way for a rat or a bug to get into your home is simple: walking right in through an open area. An open door or an open window might seem pretty inviting on a beautiful day, but if you're not careful, you might have an unwanted guest following you into your home. A great way to keep pests from entering through the windows is to make sure to equip your windows with a window screen. By adding a window screen, you can open the window and stay cool without worrying about the possible entrance of birds and rodents. As far as the door goes, make sure to always shut it behind you and close it firmly, and you should be able to keep many pests from entering your home.

Keep Firewood Outside

It can be tempting to store your firewood inside as the weather turns cold and snowy, but in this case, the harsh winds of Mother Nature are actually your friend. Bugs often create a home for themselves inside pieces of firewood, and this is especially true during the winter because they look for any shelter that they can find. With the ground usually frozen and uninhabitable, they opt for wood. A hibernating bug won't do any damage, but when the weather gets warm, insects get active. The warm interior of your heated home can trick bugs into thinking it's time to move again, and that can cause an infestation. By contrast, keeping your wood outside might be tough on you for a minute or two, but you won't have to worry about ants all over your house.

Weymouth pest control is a multi-faceted job that starts with making sure that your home provides as strong a defense against pests as possible. If you're willing to follow some common-sense tips, you can close off most routes pest have into your home.
