Unfortunately, you cannot start towing a trailer. To meet the legal requirements, you must complete the right training and pass the final exam. If you passed your driving test either on or after the 1st January 1997, you would be limited to drive vehicles that weigh no more than 3.5 tonnes and carry a trailer no greater than 750KG. However, this will depend on the total weight or maximum authorised mass, sometimes referred to as MAM. To drive with a trailer that is greater than 3.5 tonnes you must complete a B+E Training Course. This allows you to tow caravans, horse boxes and larger towing vehicles. If you are unsure if you can tow larger trailers, simply check the categories that are listed on the rear of your photocard licence. This section will show which categories that you are legally allowed to drive. Just like I have mentioned above, if you do have the B+E category listed, you will be able to tow large vehicles, trailers, horse boxes and caravans. Just be sure to check the maximum authorised mass (MAM) before taking off. Failing to comply with the correct towing laws can result in three or six points on your licence, an on the spot fine and potentially result in your vehicle and/or trailer being seized. Pure Driving are one of the UK's leading advanced driving schools and provide high quality and affordable Trailer Training Courses for those that are looking at improving their existing licences.
