Benefits of Wood, Metal, or Vinyl Fencing Panels

Home Improvement
A fence is great for defining property boundaries but they can also be used to keep people out of certain areas. There are many different materials that can be used for a fence, each with their own benefits. Whether choosing wood, metal, or vinyl fencing panels, San Fernando homeowners should weigh the pros and cons of each to get the right fence for their needs.

Wood

Wood is the most traditional material for many different construction projects, including fences. Ranchers would use split rail fences to keep livestock in their pens. Even when barbed wire was invented, it needed wood posts to hold it up. Today, wood is still a popular choice for its attractive look and cheaper price. But wood requires the most maintenance out of all the choices. Regular painting or staining is required to protect the wood from sun and rain. And the wood can be a highway for destructive insects into the house.

Chain Link

One of the most popular fence materials is chain link metal, visible in most towns and communities. Like wood, it is fairly inexpensive and easy to install. If the chain link is galvanized to prevent rust, these fences will last for several decades with very little maintenance. But chain link is one of the most boring of fences, with no frills or color. As tastes evolve, chain link is becoming more popular in commercial and industrial settings as opposed to residential. There is no potential for privacy with a chain link fence and they are easy to climb over or cut through.

Steel

Steel is often the preferred material for a fence, especially as a security barrier. It is the strongest metal and lasts longer than other materials. But, like chain link, it is not very versatile, coming in only a few simple shapes. It is also quite heavy and requires special installation processes that homeowners may not know.

Wrought Iron

A good alternative to steel is wrought iron. It is very strong and durable, but it can be shaped into different decorative designs. It will not rot or warp in the weather and will not rust if maintained with paint or other coatings. It is, however, the most expensive option, especially if creative designs are involved.

Aluminum

Aluminum fencing is one of the most versatile materials for fences. It can come in post and rail designs or in larger panels. It requires almost no maintenance, being naturally rustproof. The aluminum does cost more, initially than wood or chain link, but has no maintenance costs. Aluminum fencing can be easily dented or damaged, needing to be replaced instead of repaired.

Vinyl

Vinyl or PVC fencing attempts to coordinate the best parts of wood and metal into one fence. It is a lightweight material that most homeowners can install on their own. It is just as cheap as wood, but does not require any maintenance. It is a sturdy material that is not affected by moisture or insects. The pieces can be formed into many different looks. Vinyl is capable of standing up to many elements that nature can throw at it and requires minimal maintenance to remain looking good. If a portion of the vinyl fence is damaged, the modular nature of the structure allows the damaged portion to be easily replaced.

There are many different materials homeowners have to choose from. Whether wood, metal, or vinyl fencing panels, San Fernando residents should list the pros and cons of each and how they compare to their personal project.
