You've been searching for the perfect granite for months. You've done all of your research and finally selected the pattern you want in your home. You have just had your countertop installation in Cumming, and now it's time to enjoy your beautiful new granite. The hard part is over, right? But wait, how will you take care of the granite? Is it hard? The truth is that taking care of granite does not have to be a big deal. It's actually easy, as long as you know the do's and don'ts of granite care. Here is what you need to know. Proper Cleaning First, the biggest dos involve cleaning. The first rule is to always blot up spills. One of the worst things you can do with granite is leave acidic substances like coffee, wine, fruit juice, tomato sauce, or soda spills sitting on your counter. They can seep into the granite and leave a bad stain if they are not wiped up quickly after a spill. This is especially true if your granite is unsealed. Also, make sure that you use a sponge or soft cloth to wipe up spills. Try using a specially made granite cleaner instead of soap. The use of soap on your granite will not damage it, however, repeated use over time can cause grime buildup. Taking Care While one of the benefits of granite is that you can set hot pans directly on the stone, you should be careful when doing so. Be especially careful that there are not particles on the countertop that can get trapped between the hot pan, skillet, or dish when you set it on the surface. This can cause scratches and dents in your granite. It is also possible to cause thermal shock, even on granite, and cause cracking, so just be careful when setting hot things directly onto the stone. Also, always use cutting boards. Again, granite is extremely durable, but you will avoid scratching your granite and dulling or ruining your knives by using a cutting board. Things to Avoid When cleaning your beautiful granite countertops, avoid using the cleaners that you tackle your bathroom, tile, and tub with. Even the powder cleaners and ones that are designated as "soft" can contain materials that can scratch or dull your granite. Also, be very careful not to sit on your granite countertops. They can crack under too much weight. Be especially careful when leaving heavy kitchen appliances out on your countertops. Kitchen-Aid mixers are heavy, so make sure that you put the mixer in a well-supported spot if you leave it sitting on top of your granite. Finally, be careful when storing products on top of your granite. For instance, perfumes, nail products, lotions, and more can spill or leak without you realizing it. The spilled liquid can get trapped under the bottle and stain your granite over time. By carefully adhering to these do's and don'ts, you can keep your granite looking as good as new long after your countertop installation in Cumming.
