Working on a scaffold can be a dangerous job if it is not in compliance with proper safety standards. Workers should strictly comply with the safety procedures so that they can get their work done without any sort of accident. Following are some safety law, duties and responsibilities outlined by officials for employers, supervisors and workers regarding scaffold safety: Well trained Staff Train all your staff in understanding and handling the design and the operation of scaffolding. Training should cover how to safely get on and off scaffoldings and it should also cover fall protection comprehensively. Preparation Make sure that everything is in order when using a scaffold. The base should be level, sound and adjusted. The locking devices of the scaffold should be secure and the ground level should be stable. Furthermore, there should be no hazards like obstructions in changes of surfaces, or overhead wires. Legal and Authentic Employers Do not work with employers who operate without a license as they are a significant obstacle to scaffold safety. They purchase the material, and put it together without having it surveyed for safety. Load Capacity Know the load capacity of your scaffold, and comply with it. Do not try to put more workers on the scaffolding platform than it can accommodate. Also, don't overload your scaffold with equipment and materials. If your scaffold isn't capable to hold the capacity that you place on it then it might collapse. Guardrails If the building is more than 10 feet above the ground then the design of the scaffold must consist of guardrails on at least three sides facing away from the building. You should have a top, middle and a bottom rail. Inspection Have the scaffolding routinely inspected by a competent person such as a professional engineer. Manage the space well As there isn't much space on a scaffold, it is important that everything is stored in an organized manner. The platform should be kept free from obstructions of all kinds. All sorts of debris should be placed in a single container or otherwise it should be removed from the platform immediately. Balance Keep the scaffold and its platform at a perfect level. Also the workers should be careful while working on a scaffold. Any sudden movements can cause a loss of balance which can lead to scaffolding accidents and injury. Protection Use appropriate protective gear such as non-slip protective footwear, fall protection, head protection and other equipment. If you comply with all these safety standards, then a scaffold can be one of the safest places to work at.
