The Importance of Getting in Shape for Fishing

Fishing is a fun and enjoyable activity for people of all ages, whether they are looking for a casual and calm experience on the open sea or are dedicated to competitive fishing and finding the ultimate catch. Just about anyone is ready to try the former, but the latter requires some effort on your part. So when you are ready to schedule a fun outing like Cape Canaveral charter fishing, just be sure that you are in the proper shape.

Wait—do you ready have to be in good shape to go fishing? If you plan on battling it out with the big beasts of the sea, then yes, you do! If you are not prepared to fight with a tough bass, for example, you are going to lose an opportunity for a great catch. Or, worse, you can end up in a world of pain the next day from all the yanking and jerking required to get a big animal out of the water. If you want the best experience, here is some advice on how you should prepare:

  • First, you should know that your preparedness for a big catch depends on your age, size, height, musculature, previous experience, any prior injuries, and other factors.
  • Building strength overall is essential for having a successful experience fishing, but building strength in specific areas, and learning how to prolong your endurance, are most important of all.
  • You do not need to be a professional fisher or registered, competitive one to be a good fisher. Why not prepare your muscles for the experience of marathon fishing the way you would for a rock climbing outing or a day swimming at the beach?
  • At the very least, be prepared to warm up your muscles before fishing and stretch afterward. This applies to even the most amateur and casual fishers in your group, as fishing is a physical exercise first.
  • Consider compound exercises for successful fishing. Compound exercises are workout patterns that engage several joints and muscle groups. These workouts lead to better strength and cardiovascular wellness.
  • Even if you do not have access to exercise equipment like free weights or treadmills, you can still perform self-resistance exercises on your own time. For example, lunges and chin-ups do not require special equipment and use your own body weight as resistance.
  • If you want to be ready for some major fish fighting, try to exercise at least 3 times a week.
  • Try to focus on exercises that replicate the movements required in order to cast a long line and reel in big fish, such as pulling from the upper back, using the thigh muscles to resist force, and pulling inward with the forearms.
  • Some popular exercises that are great preparation for fishing include front squats, kettlebell swings, deadlifts, and lunges.
  • Protect your spine by building core strength, especially in your abdominal area. A stronger core will absorb effort instead of relaying stress to delicate bones and joints.
  • Workouts do more than build muscle. They protect your back, knees, and other vital areas from becoming sore or overworked due to the stress of fighting with large fish.

As always, you should speak to a doctor before you begin a new exercise regimen. But even if these workout tips are not right for you, you can still enjoy the fun of Cape Canaveral charter fishing. This advice is simply for those looking for a serious catch.
