If you're good to your septic system, it will be good to you. Keeping your septic system's helpful bacteria flourishing can keep waste degrading at regular intervals. By following this list of things you shouldn't do, you won't have to worry about your Covington, GA, septic drain field overflowing or having to rebuild the colonies of bacteria that make up the heart of the system. Not Pumping Regularly If you don't pump your septic system, you can get clogs or other serious problems. When you schedule to have the tank pumped every 2 or 3 years, your whole system will run more smoothly. Ask a septic tank professional how often they recommend pumping based on the size of your tank and how much it's used. This will be a highly individual number, depending on the specifics of your system. Doing Laundry at Once If you wait to do all your laundry on the same day, you will flush a lot of water into your septic tank, which could then overflow into the drain field too quickly. Space out your loads through the week for a happy system. Using Chemicals to Clean Flushing chemicals of any kind—even those advertised as being helpful to a septic system—is a gamble. It's always better to use environmentally-safe cleaners. Make sure to check the labels of any products you use and opt for those that other septic-system owners vouch for. Garbage Disposal Use Dumping too much solid waste into a septic system is one of the worst things you can do. If you put food into it, the bacteria will have to anaerobically break it down. Chicken bones or leftovers might be impossible for the bacteria to break down, meaning these scraps will sit in your septic system until they're pumped out. If you have a garbage disposal, make it a priority not to use it. If you don't have one, make sure not to waste the money getting one! Flushing Lots of Paper Paper products are the culprits behind lots of clogged pipes. Tampons and other feminine hygiene products can get stuck in pipes and prevent everything from going through normally. Paper towels and diapers are other items that often get flushed through. Toilet paper is usually just fine, but make sure that your family and guests know that fixing a Covington, GA, septic system after a clogging incident is a lot of time and headache!
