Regular optometric exams are important to maintaining good eye health. You should work with your optometrist to determine a schedule for eye treatments in Fremont, CA, that is right for you. In very general terms, WebMD recommends that adults under 40 who have healthy eyes and no known health problems that can affect the eyes should visit their optometrist every 2 to 4 years for a regular exam. Adults over 40 and individuals with eye problems and health concerns that can affect the eyes, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, should schedule more frequent visits. Children should have their vision checked as part of their annual health exams each year beginning at birth and then begin visiting an optometrist every 1 to 2 years once they reach 1st grade. What to Expect at an Exam At your eye exam, your optometrist is going to test and check your eyes in a variety of different ways to make certain they are working properly. You can expect to experience many of the following tests at your eye exam: - Visual Acuity - This is the test you are expecting, with the large eye chart on the wall showing descending rows of nonsense letters that get smaller as they approach the bottom. By having you read this chart, your doctor can categorize your eyesight using the standard 20/20 model.
- Cover Test - Your eyes need to work together to be effective, so your doctor will have you stare at something a distance away and then watch your eyes as he covers and uncovers them. He's watching for one eye to turn away from the target, called strabismus.
- External Exam - Your optometrist will physically examine your eyes and check visually for any problems. She will also check to see how your pupils respond to light.
- Refraction Testing - If you need corrective lenses, you will need a prescription. Refraction testing is used to fine-tune prescriptions by flipping phoropters back and forth and asking you which is better.
- Slit Lamp - This device shines a high-intensity light onto your eye and allows the doctor to examine your cornea, lens, and iris to check for eye conditions such as conjunctivitis, cataracts, or retinopathy, just to name a few.
- Glaucoma Testing - The doctor needs to check that the fluid in your eyes is at a normal pressure. Your eye will be numbed and the doctor will either use a tonometer or a puff of air to test the pressure in your eye.
- Retinal Exam - Some eye exams involve pupil dilation, where you will be give eye drops that will cause your pupils to dilate. A widely dilated pupil allows the doctor to look through it to the back of the eye and examine the retina, the retinal blood vessels, and the optic nerve.
Depending upon the health of your eyes and the frequency of your visits, you may experience even more eye treatments in Fremont, CA, than those described above. Your eyes are important, so don't let anything get in the way of regular visits to your optometrist.
