There are many benefits of deep tissue massage that have been documented, including one in particular that is helpful for those with hypertension. Those who have high blood pressure and are looking in Orem for deep tissue massage might consider the fact that some studies have shown substantial decreases in diastolic and systolic blood pressure that resulted following deep tissue massage. Given that hypertension—systolic blood pressure in excess of 140 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure in excess of 90 mm Hg—affects one in three adults in America, deep tissue massage is certainly worth exploring as part of an overall regimen to reduce high blood pressure. How Deep Tissue Massage Reduces Blood Pressure One of the primary benefits of any type of massage is the dual impact of taking charge of your health while at the same time having a calming effect on the body and inducing a feeling of relaxation. This in turn tends to lower stress levels and, for some, as stress levels go down, so does blood pressure. Additionally, massage, particularly deep tissue massage, can substantially improve circulation, which in turn may reduce swelling and inflammation which can occur in concert with high blood pressure. Studies Have Linked Massage to Reduction in Hypertension - Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine – Participants’ blood pressure fell after one 45- to 60-minute deep tissue massage.
- Journal of Clinical Psychiatry – Massage, such as deep tissue massage, reduced the body’s stress hormone levels and heart rate while at the same time increased relaxation by activating the release of both oxytocin and serotonin.
- Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine - A study involving 263 participants with muscle spasm or strain were assessed before and after a 45- to 60-minute deep tissue massage, resulting in lower blood pressure by around 10 beats less per minute.
- Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies - Subjects who suffered from hypertension were provided ten 30-minute massage sessions over five weeks and subsequently experienced reduced blood pressure and feelings of depression, less hostility in their behavior, and a reduction in their levels of cortisol.
- University of Maryland Medical Center – Participants who were given a deep-tissue massage averaged a systolic blood pressure drop of 10.4 mm Hg and a diastolic pressure drop of 5.3 mm Hg. Deep-tissue massage not only eased stress and tension but it increased the production of serotonin, a hormone that increases feelings of euphoria and happiness.
Before considering a visit to Orem for deep tissue massage to treat hypertension, one should always first consult their doctor.
