If you want your granite countertops in Marietta to last for many years to come, the steps are actually pretty simple. Some basic maintenance allows the natural stone to last for the life of your home and kitchen without a lot of effort on your part. There are, however, some things you could do to completely undermine these efforts, making your countertops fall into a state of damage and disrepair. To avoid this disastrous situation, make sure to stay away from the following actions. Forgetting to Seal the Stone When properly sealed, granite can withstand water, spills, knives, hot dishes, and just about anything else that life throws its way. If it is improperly sealed, however, it becomes much easier to damage. Make sure your countertops are professionally sealed the first time around, and ensure that they get re-sealed annually to keep up that layer of protection. You can hire someone or you can do this yourself. Ignoring Oil Spills While sealed granite is resistant to water and stains, oil that is allowed to sit on the surface for too long can work its way into the stone and leave permanent stains. Quickly wipe up spilled oil to avoid this problem. Clean with Abrasive Chemicals Acids, commercial cleaning agents, and other harsh chemicals can cause irreparable damage to your beautiful countertops. Instead, use water and mild detergent to do most of your cleaning, or purchase a cleaner designed specifically for use on granite. Clean with Steel Wool While granite countertops in Marietta are resistant to staining and scratching, using scouring pads or steel wool for regular cleaning is not a good idea. At best, it will weaken the protectant layer. At worst, it will permanently mar the beautiful surface of your granite. For daily cleaning, use a soft cloth to clean the surface of your countertops.
