SMS Marketing is one of the best ways to take advantage of the popularity of cell phones. Cell phones as well as Smartphones are everywhere and people use them daily for a variety of reasons. For 2017 the number of mobile phone users is forecast to reach 4.77 billion which means that with a slight exaggeration you may reach a client base of just under 5 billion people. Ever since the first text message was sent it was used as an efficient means of communication. This then evolved into a very successful strategy of mobile marketing. Taking it from the beginning; text messaging, or texting, is the act of composing and sending electronic messages, typically consisting of alphabetic and numeric characters, between two or more users of mobile phones, fixed or portable devices (e.g., tablet computers or smartphones). While text messages are usually sent over a phone network, due to the convergence between the telecommunication and broadcasting industries in the 2000s, text messages may also be sent via a cable network or Local Area Network. The term originally referred to messages sent using the Short Message Service (SMS). It has grown beyond alphanumeric text to include multimedia messages (known as MMS) containing digital images, videos, and sound content, as well as ideograms known as emoji (happy faces and other icons). As of 2016, text messages are used by youth and adults for personal, family and social purposes and in business, government and non-governmental organizations for communication between colleagues. Text messages are also used to interact with automated systems, for example, to order products or services from e-commerce websites, or to participate in online contests. SMS marketing is used by advertisers and service providers to send messages to mobile phone users about promotions, payment due dates, and other notifications instead of using postal mail, e-mail, or voicemail. SMS marketing campaigns are efficient simply due to the fact that most people own a mobile phone, smartphone or other device that can receive text messages. Furthermore, even though most have email accounts not everyone checks their emails as regularly as they do their mobile phones. It is a proven fact that people will check a text message within three minutes of receiving one. The most significant reason, however, to incorporate SMS marketing into any given marketing campaign is the significant low cost compared to other marketing techniques. If you take into account the amount of clients that can be reached, the invaluable relationship created between the company and its consumers and the amount of information provided in that one text message the consumer will receive and compare it to the cost of any other marketing strategy, you too will reach the conclusion that Mobile Marketing may just be the most productive type of marketing available. This is why ever since the first SMS marketing campaign was launched (in Europe in 2001 by Txtbomb for an Islands Record release and in North America by the Labatt Brewing Company in 2002), it has expanded rapidly.
