Carpet Cleaning Tips for High Traffic Areas

Home Improvement
High traffic areas exist in most busy households. They will soil much quicker and as a result wear much quicker. To stop the wear regular cleaning is necessary or the other alternative is to protect with runners and rugs.

Our experience is that entrances, stairs and lounge carpets take the brunt of the traffic. Putting down protection sort of defeats the object of having carpets and therefore we recommend hot water extraction carpet cleaning to stop the wear and soiling.

DIY Carpet Cleaning

It's ok to hire a carpet cleaning machine and do the work yourself, or maybe you own a carpet cleaner. DO NOT keep going over the high traffic areas in an attempt to get them clean. You will soak them and they will start to smell and develop mould.

It is worth remembering that these traffic areas may also be worn. We call this carpet greying. The fibres are scratched by grit and the appearance can look like dirt. Read on to get the most out of your carpet cleaning machine......

Pre-spray, Agitate, Extraction

These are the golden rules! You will need either a very good professional carpet cleaning solution or a traffic lane pre-spray. You can boost these with sodium percarbonate. Here are some examples of pre-sprays;
  • Trafficlean by Prochem for greasy traffic lanes
  • Enz-All by Chemspec. An enzyme pre-spray that is my favourite for heavy soil
  • Formula 321 by Chemspec. Gives excellent results for traffic lanes
  • SoilBreak by Hydramaster. Another enzyme pre-spray that gets the job done
So you get the idea and you can search for similar products that are available in your country. Google - professional carpet pre-spray or traffic lane pre-spray. These products are not cheap but they should last you a long time and you will get very good results. I strongly advise against the use of shop bought carpet cleaning solutions! Go Pro and never look back!

The Best Carpet Cleaning Process for Traffic Lanes

  • Vacuum the carpets and then vacuum again. Most loose soil is removed by vacuuming. This part of the process is crucial.
  • Get yourself a pump up sprayer. A 7 litre sprayer is good
  • Make up the pre-spray. Fill the pump sprayer and pump it up
  • Spray the area you will be cleaning. Don't soak it but give it a good spray
  • Agitate it with a medium stiffness long-handled brush by brushing up and down until it starts to look clean. Pre-spray more if needed as you brush. Treat stains with the pre-spray and brush with a hand brush. Be careful not to distort the fibres!
  • Leave the area for about 10-15 minutes to let the pre-spray dwell
  • Extract with your carpet cleaning machine containing nothing but hot water. Go over it 2-3 times only!!! Make sure for every wet pass you do a drying pass (with spray off). Wet Pass - Dry Pass, Wet Pass - Dry Pass, and so on......

Why Choose this Carpet Cleaning Method?

You might be thinking that this method is a lot of hassle. Surely you can simply put the detergent in the machine and clean that way - can you?

TRUST ME. I clean carpets for a living. Miles and miles of all types of carpet every year. This method works and is also recommended by many carpet manufacturers. Think of it like washing your clothes. The washing machine fills with water and laundry detergent - then it agitates. Finally the clothes are rinsed. It's the only way to effectively remove soil and stains, even at low temperatures. Washing machine and laundry detergent manufacturers can't be wrong. They know their stuff!

Good luck with your carpet cleaning and PLEASE leave me some comments about how you get on.
