It's vital to make sure your swimming pool water’s pH is always balanced. Not only can this help to keep your pool's metal fittings and walls in good condition, but it can also prevent itching or burning for anyone who enters the water. The pH range that you need to aim for is 7.2 to 7.6; should you test the water and find that it falls outside this range, here is how you could rectify the issue. Are you using good testing products? Firstly, you should make sure that you use good quality equipment when testing the water. Here at Pool Warehouse, we stock a variety of products for use in testing, including test strips and tablets. You should also remember to test the water's chemical balances regularly. How sodium ash can help If, even after using suitable testing equipment, you find that an overly low pH is still being registered, you should try adding sodium carbonate, which is also commonly referred to as soda ash. We stock supplies of this; look for pH Plus in our selection of Water Balance Chemicals. In a single treatment, you should never add more than 2-3g of sodium carbonate per square metre of water. Starting with the deep end, distribute this chemical across the entire pool surface. You can distribute the chemical through the water by having the pump circulating, before waiting an hour or so and then re-testing. Add more sodium carbonate if, at this point, the pH remains too low. Don't worry if the soda ash initially clouds the water, as you can expect this to fade over a day or so. Treating your water with baking soda If, after following the above tips, the pH is still dropping, you can attempt to raise it by adding sodium bicarbonate, otherwise called baking soda. However, you should only do this if the water's total alkalinity is below the recommended range of 80-140ppm. If it is, add 3-4g of baking soda - in our stock, it's a product called Alkalinity Increaser - per square metre of water to boost the alkalinity by 10ppm. You should be sure to keep the pump running as you do this. After each treatment, you should check the alkalinity to make sure it doesn’t exceed the advised range. If the pH problem persists, you could point water jets at the surface to get the water moving around. This process can require several days, but be very effective.
