The entrepreneur I interviewed was Bryan Adams, President and Owner of WBA Manufacturing, Incorporated. His company produces concrete targets used for the testing of oil explosives. He officially started his business in 1988 after making these targets for about three years just as a part time job to make some extra money on the weekends. In the beginning it was just a one man operation and he worked on it in his spare time and on the weekends. Even though it is still a small business with only five full-time employees, it is a successful business that delivers products to some big players in the oil and natural gas industries. We talked over the phone for about an hour and I learned a lot about the mindset of an entrepreneur and what it takes to start, run, and grow a small business. One of the two main things I took away from this interview was you need to have the foresight to see what kind of a future an opportunity has. While Mr. Adams was working full-time for his dad at his hydraulics plant one of his dad’s customers came to his dad with an opportunity. His dad passed on it but said that his son would be happy to take the chance. For years Mr. Adams considered this as his weekend job to make some extra money. In a short time, his customer’s competitors caught wind of a new way to test their charges and came to him asking to sell them his product. Mr. Adams had two choices: continue working 80 hours a week at a job where he wouldn’t advance very far or take a chance and turn this “weekend hobby” into a full-time business. Because of his foresight, his business has thrived and has been the vendor of concrete targets for giants such as Owen Oil Tools, Schlumberger, Hunting Titan, and Haliburton. The second thing is you have to be willing to put in the work no matter how hard it is to make your business successful. As I said before, Mr. Adams was working 80 hours a week for a construction company and making his targets at night and delivering them to Houston on the weekends. When he started his business the only employee was himself. He had to mix the concrete for hundreds of targets by himself and then make all the deliveries himself. He said while he was just starting the company, he was working close to 100 hours a week. 100 hours a week of manual labor is inconceivable to today’s entrepreneurs but he had a vision, a goal, and the determination to make this new business succeed. He told me that the one thing that all successful entrepreneurs have in common is a good work ethic. He then admitted that it also takes a fair amount of luck. Bibliography Adams, B.
