National Children’s Dental Health Month – also known as NCDHM - started as a single day event in Cleveland, Ohio, on February 3, 1941. The American Dental Association also held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. This turned into a weeklong event back in 1955. Finally, in 1981, the program was extended to be a month long to be observed every February, and became National Children’s Dental Health Month. The reason for National Children's Dental Health Month is to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. NCDHM messages and materials have reached millions of people in communities across the country. This year, for example, the American Dental Association recommends that all children are to be screened by an orthodontist at age seven and to be seen by a dentist at age one. The ADA also recommends to brush one’s teeth for two minutes twice a day, and to eat healthy, all in order to maintain good dental hygiene.
