There are a few core minerals that have become especially popular for American kitchen countertops in the last twenty years or so. How is it that quartz rose to such heights in popularity for this very purpose? As you research quartz countertops in Alpharetta and their perks, here’s a quick history of how this option came to be. Availability It probably helped quartz's rise in popularity that it is one of the hardest minerals on earth while also one of the most abundant. Meanwhile, it also doesn’t look too bad either. This combination of hardiness, availability, and aesthetics is essentially what led to it becoming a great countertop option for kitchens and bathrooms over the past fifty years or so. The Ingenuity of the 1960s An Italian company by the name of Breton S.p.A first engineered the process of pressing polymer resins into raw quartz crystal to make countertops in the 1960s. This Italian company has been around since 1963, and founder Marcello Toncelli immediately recognized the potential value of quartz in the countertop making industry—an option that had been virtually unexplored by others up until that point. Incorporating the resins into the quartz is what allowed for the shape and strength of today’s quartz countertops, a combination that resulted in a low porosity and an extreme hardness, which is a double threat for excellent counter surface material in resisting scratches and the growth of bacteria. The Trend Flow As with all European styles, the trend really took off in Italy for quartz countertops then, but took a little longer to reach the United States. America in the 1960s was still stuck on laminate over quartz, granite, or limestone kitchen counters. The tables have since turned drastically towards natural stone countertops in the United States, which is why quartz countertops in Alpharetta continue to be so popular.
