In my humble opinion, the best family vacations involve getting out in nature and showing the little ones the beauty of the world. One of my favourite areas of outstanding natural beauty is around Méribel in the French Alps - the dramatic snow-capped mountains, thick woodland, crisp alpine air and abundance of wildlife make this a magical place that any family is sure to fall in love with. There are many great hiking routes through the mountains. The magnificent Vanoise National Park has some of the best of these and there are a number of cosy, picturesque and well-equipped mountain huts to stay in after a day of exploring the trails. Getting here is relatively easy which makes it perfect for families. You simply fly into Geneva and then we can provide a Geneva to Meribel transfer to your accommodation (more info below). Here is what you need to know about the charming and comfortable mountain huts: Refuge du Plan At 1750 meters, this traditional mountain refuge is located a 30-minute walk from the Lac de Tueda car park in Méribel-Mottaret in the Plan Tueda Nature Reserve. The restaurant serves delicious Savoyard cuisine until mid-afternoon. Evening meals are available too but you must make a reservation. I highly recommend dining outside so that you can take in the spectacular views over the Aiguille du Fruit as you enjoy the fine cuisine. Refuge du Christ Found at 1650m at La Traie, this lovely alpine hut sleeps up to 13 and is accessed by foot or snowshoes from Le Villard - this will take 90 minutes tops. Although it has a traditional appearance and serves Savoyard specialities, it also features modern conveniences that the kids are sure to appreciate. The wine list is excellent and you benefit from outstanding views over Mont-Blanc and the surrounding area. Refuge du Saut This 25-bed refuge is found at a 2126m and is a great stop off for hikers on the Vanoise tour. You can choose between half-board, full board or B&B during your stay, but many simply stop off for a spot of lunch and the amazing views and calm atmosphere found up here. The friendly staff and mountain activities also make this a popular choice for families. It is a two-hour walk from Tueda car park in Méribel-Mottaret. Peclet-Polset This impressive modern mountain refuge is located in the height of the mountains at 2747 meters and sleeps up to 84 people. Solar panels and new electrics make the property not only ecologically efficient but also super comfortable: you can enjoy hot showers, breakfast and dinner during your stay.
