Always up for a challenge? I have one which will test even the most hardcore individuals, which is the epic trail race from Morzine to Avoriaz taking place on August 12th, 2017. In addition to the thrill of competition and putting your limits to the test, this popular trail race also provides the brave runners with breathtaking views from the highest summit in Portes du Soleil – the almighty Hauts-Forts. The Race The route will start in Morzine and take you over passes and summits around the awesome Hauts-Forts, before finishing in Avoriaz at 1800 metres. Be warned, this is not for the faint of heart! Last year over 500 people competed, which created an electric energy that swirled around the region for the entirety of the day. The finish line, in particular, was a great place to be as friends, family and even the locals spurred on the competitors who conquered the gruelling yet extremely rewarding race. This culminated with a prize-giving ceremony, food and well-deserved celebrations! There are three different races to choose from; 55km, 24km and a relay race (two runners) for the long path only. • The long route and relay begins at 7am and follows a similar path to the shorter route, but includes a daunting additional descent to the base of Prodains and another climb to the finish line in the centre of Avoriaz. Those attempting the long race must have 1 litre of water, a survival blanket, food, a mountain jacket, whistle and phone with the organiser’s contact details. • The shorter (but still hardcore) path begins at 08:45 and finishes at the same place. Participants must have the same items as listed above. Both routes will involve narrow paths, ridge walks, steep drops, testing climbs and plenty of tough terrain from the outset – you will need to be in shape, but even other trail runs will not fully prepare you for this intimidating gauntlet. Facilities There are several drink stations along the route, as well as three main locations for food and drink: Plateau de Nyon, Mines d’Or lake and Jean Vaurnet square in Avoriaz. There are also helpful and encouraging stewards around the route who will keep you moving; the entire event is very well organised. Registration You can register for the 12 August 2017 race online now: registration is open until Thursday the 10th of August. The price has yet to be confirmed. You must show a valid permit or medical certificate in order to participate – this must be from a doctor and indicate that you are fit to take part in competitive athletics or running races.
