How to optimally use the conventional waterproofing methods to safeguard your house?

Home Improvement

Waterproofing is essential aspect of building construction, which prevents the ingress of water and slow destruction of building due to water leakage. Waterproofing is not a new concept, though it has revolutionised with many new technologies. The methodology of waterproofing has been changing with changing in building architecture. For example, earlier building walls were constructed with masonry and stones. These days concrete or cement walls are in use, which are quite vulnerable to water seepage. So, using of waterproofing membranes is essential subject of building architectural designs.

Most of the waterproofing in Melbourne cbd is placed in position with cement, lime mortar and waterproofing membrane so that water doesn’t seep into the walls. There is much development occurred in construction material technology, and consequently waterproofing technology has also changed a lot.

Roof waterproofing tips

Present day constructions use primarily Portland cement and its blend with puzzolonic and slag materials. Contractors involved in rooftop waterproofing in Melbourne are also keeping updated with compatible alternatives of waterproofing systems. Some conventional waterproofing system is still practiced successfully. Some roof constructions demand modern waterproofing system, so contractors use it accordingly. It all depends on the type of materials used and structural behaviour into consideration.

Some conventional waterproofing systems are as follows:

  • Lime terracing or brick bat coba system is still useful for roofing system.
  • Some contractors rely on bituminous treatment, which is not expensive and easily done.
  • Metallic sheet wrapping is tedious process but effecting in roofing system.
  • Polyurethane based waterproofing is relatively new method and quite effective to prevent seepage.
  • Epoxy based waterproofing treatment
  • Box-type waterproofing system
  • Liquid rubber in Melbourne is another conventional method to safeguard the roof.

Waterproofing the plywood deck

A plywood roof deck is typically installed over a garage or an outdoor space where homeowners want to relax, sit or probably make use of container gardening. The problem with plywood roof is the vulnerability to rain, wind, sun and others. It is therefore important to have a waterproofing coating to a deck to maintain the beauty of the roof and also protect it from unwarranted water leakage.

Clean the deck to remove dirt and debris. Depending upon the wood you are using, fill the cracks and holes with fillers. For plywood deck, roofing fabrics are available to cover the surface. If you are doing it yourself, you need a roller, good quality paint brush, knife, rubber gloves and coveralls.

Read the instruction carefully that comes with the waterproof coating material. Before start the project, do a test patch on a small area and make sure the coating sticks to the plywood properly.

Applying the coating is the most important stage. Start the coating from the far end of the deck, and use only one gallon at a time. Use your paint roller brush for uniformly spread the coating to a large area. After finishing the coating, let the coating to dry for least 24 hours. If require, add another layer.

A significant part is finishing. If your main concern is moisture, then add a skid resistant topcoat to make it safer. Topcoat is also evenly spread with the help of a paint roller. Let the coat dry completely for 2 days before you install the ply on the roof.
