Well, it turns out that’s another great reason to head to this ever-popular part of Portugal, whether on a temporary or permanent basis, as confirmed by a new survey of more than 40 worldwide resorts and cities. The region came out at the top of Post Office Travel Money’s “holiday costs barometer” for the second consecutive year, in news that is sure to interest many a Briton interested in a “currency conscious” holiday destination or place to live. Unsurprising news for longstanding admirers of the Algarve The survey, which examined the average price of tourist staples in 44 locations, found that a three-course evening meal for two, including a bottle of house wine, cost just £18.27 – more than £150 cheaper than the equivalent meal in Dubai, which ranked as the priciest destination. Sunny Beach in Bulgaria represented the second-best value resort, with an evening meal for two costing £23.15 and a bottle of local beer, 69p. The likes of the Costa del Sol in Spain, Marmaris in Turkey, Prague and Budapest also figured highly as affordable destinations, but none of them beat the Algarve. It’s news that simply further confirms the Algarve’s status as one of the most in-vogue current tourist destinations, which will come as no surprise to those who have long been familiar with its charms. Indeed, it has also recently been confirmed by the Regional Directorate of Culture (DRCAlg) that 2016 saw a total of 370,000 people visit Algarve’s officially monitored monuments, representing a 5.1% rise on the year before – or almost 18,000 more people.
