5 Pitfalls You should Look Out for While Designing a Custom Wine Cellar

Home Improvement

Are you a wine lover? Want to design a wine cellar in your basement area?  Have you thought about the errors that you might commit while designing your custom cellar? We are all aware of the fact that wine should be cellared correctly so that it can mature into a fine wine, just like what the winemaker has intended. But most cellars are built without proper insulation, equipment, or technical knowledge to let the cellar function properly. Here are some common mistakes that you should try to avoid.

Not checking the temperature of the cellar

Many people make the mistake of assuming that underground cellars are a cool place. But in reality, the case is totally different most of the time. If the cellar has a concrete ceiling, it may convert into a hot zone during summer resulting in cooked up wines. Though these cellars become cooler during the months of winter, it is this variation in temperature that deteriorates the quality of the wine. So, before planning for a custom wine cellar design make sure to check your cellar during summer months.

Not using proper climate control equipment

The ideal temperature for a wine cellar is 14 degrees, plus or minus one degree and the ideal humidity is 65% to 75%. If you think that installing a conventional air conditioner will solve the problem, you are wrong as they cannot keep the temperature low for a long period of time and do not address the issue of humidity. If air humidity is low it will lead the corks to dry letting in air and oxidizing the wine. Again if the humidity is high, it will lead to the development of mold. So make sure to install proper climate control equipment like a cellar conditioner to keep your wine in good shape.

Poor choice of cellar door

Another common mistake while designing a custom cellar in your home is choosing a wine cellar door based on its aesthetic appeal only. The door needs to be made of a proper material to provide an air tight seal and proper insulation for the cellar. It must be strong and sturdy as well to protect your precious collection from theft and burglary. Wooden or wrought iron cellar doors are best options in this regard.

Not insulating the cellar

Most cellar owners do not pay enough attention to the insulation of the cellar. They are generally poorly insulated or not insulated at all. It is very important to insulate a cellar with the right type of material to allow the cellar conditioner to function properly, therefore, reducing the amount of energy used. Keep in mind to install proper insulation at the beginning of the construction of the cellar as it is easy and inexpensive at that time but it can be very costly if added later.

So, are you ready to design a custom wine cellar in your house? I hope the above pointers will help you in avoiding some mistakes while constructing your wine den. Make sure to take professional advice and contact wine cellar repair personnel if you face any major problem.
