Out of this World in Lanzarote

Travel & Tourism
The island of Lanzarote is home to stunning landscapes that are enough to take not only your breath away, but your sense of gravity too – blink more than once, and you could easily mistake your surroundings for Mars or the moon. But you don’t need to travel as far as that. There are a great range of places to stay in comfort in Lanzarote – resorts are close to all the main sights, with easy transport links for getting you out among the lava-sculpted scenery. Here are our team’s choices of what to see and where to stay on your visit to Lanzarote.

Jameos del Agua

Around 4,000 years ago, Montaña La Coruna erupted and formed a 6km lava tube below ground. Thanks to artist and architect César Manrique, who fashioned this unique attraction in the 1960s, you can walk along it and encounter a few man-made surprises along the way. Descending a stone staircase, you encounter first a lake, home to a species of blind albino crab not found anywhere else on earth, before emerging into a huge open-air cave filled with exotic plants and a pool of azure water that only the King of Spain is allowed to touch. You won’t fail to be stunned by the beauty and otherworldliness of such a place.

StaySeaside Los Jameos Playa is well-hidden along Los Pocillos Beach. What makes this property unique is the way the building and its ground blends seamlessly with the landscape, allowing you to fully savour your surroundings. The perfect accompaniment for a visit to Jameos del Agua, this is one of our favourites in Lanzarote – resorts such as this are worth visiting more than once!

Timfanya National Park

This park surrounds what is known as the Fire Mountains, and it certainly lives up to its billing: you won’t find any wildlife here, only solidified magma and lava. Such is the threat of danger that solo hiking is off limits. You can still enjoy its spectacular moonscapes in a number of other ways, however, such as by self-drive, camel-ride, or, my personal choice, by coach tour, This last option will allow you to view all the park’s main features alongside an experienced driver, who knows the turns and inclines like the back of their hand.

Stay Casa de Hilario is set in the shadow of the Fire Mountain and takes its name from a legendary figure who became a hermit upon his return from wars in the Philippines. You’ll find it equally peaceful and gloriously tucked away, the ideal place for intimacy and romance.

El Golfo and Lago Verdec

The wind-eroded cliffs of the southern coasts of Lanzarote are nothing short of mesmerising. Forming a variety of weird shapes, the rocks of Lago Verde are part of a half-submerged volcanic cone, which has also given its green colour to the neighbouring lagoon, courtesy of the algae that feed on its minerals. The black sand beaches on the lakeshore are also well worth exploring, as is the fishing village of El Golfo for sampling some of the island’s best restaurants.

StayLa Casona de Yaiza, also near the National Park, presents ornately decorated interiors, with paintings by Italian and Spanish Renaissance artists and a shimmering gleam of elegance. It’s an ideal counterpart to the rock-shapes of Lago Verde.

An Out of this World Experience

With its lava landscapes, underground caves and green lagoons, you couldn’t find a better alternative lunar destination than Lanzarote. Resorts and luxury hotels are all within close range of stunning locations, and our team are ideally placed to help choose the best one for you. Give one of our team a call today and book your very own otherworldly experience.

John Dixon is an experienced world traveller and the Managing Director of Prestige Holidays. For over 30 years, he has been providing accommodation in luxury Lanzarote resorts as well as Sicily, The Canaries, Bermuda and many other destinations around the globe. John tries to visit each of the destinations regularly in order to ensure the quality of his properties, and stay up-to-date about the latest local news and events. He has a taste for the finer things in life and has an interest in arts, history and culture.
