Five Free Things in Milan: A budget Guide to a Pricey City

Travel & Tourism
When travelling on a budget, trying to visit any major city can become especially challenging. Many people shy away from even contemplating destinations with pricey reputations and it would seem to be common sense to do so. However, if you let the mighty currency sign dictate where you can and cannot go you will definitely miss out on some of the greatest sites and scenes that should belong to you just as much as anyone else!

Take upscale Milan for example. Access the city with one of the many affordable Milan airport shuttles, which are offered by companies such as Shuttle Direct, and your cheap and cheerful exploration of this beautiful city can begin!

Free is Beautiful

This electric Italian hub is the banking and international business centre of the country. That, coupled with its power role in the world of fashion, certainly has driven up the cost of visiting. But that is not all there is to Milan if you know where to look. The drivers of the Milan airport shuttles can offer you a wealth of local knowledge the minute you arrive, and as everyone knows, the locals always know the best places to go!

Five Completely Free Attractions

Milan Duomo – No one should leave without seeing the Duomo. As with most Italian sites of interest, the exterior is just as magnificent as the interior. Half your time can be spent simply exploring the intricate carvings and architectural beauty of the outside of this church. The interior is equally breathtaking. The art, the architecture and the austere elegance of the cathedral can easily fill an entire day.

Cimitero Monumentale – This historic cemetery is a true ‘city of the dead’. As in life, no detail has been spared when decorating the graves of the city’s most prominent inhabitants. With over 15,000 statues and three buildings of interest the cemetery is a popular place to simply wander around and take in the slightly eerie atmosphere.

Unicredit Building – Be sure to arm yourself with a good camera and extra memory cards for this one. The Unicredit Building is the tallest skyscraper in Milan and is the centrepiece of the steel-and-glass clad business district. Spend some time marvelling at the amazing architecture and then explore the artwork and sculptures that are placed around the complex. If you visit towards the end of the day the sunset reflected against the buildings and fountains with take your breath away!

Parco Sempione – You will be pleasantly surprised by the beautiful green spaces found in the city centre. Walking around the park will reveal a number of architectural gems such as the Castello Sforzesco, the Palazzo dell’Arte and Torre Branca.

Castello Sforzesco – Built in the fifteenth century, the city’s old castle has stood through centuries of history. The exterior is magnificent with its imposing fortress-like structure. Today, the old castle is home to a number of museums and art galleries which are definitely worth visiting.

How to Get There

Milan is one of Italy’s busiest airports. Flights from the UK are frequent and generally quite affordable. After booking your flight go ahead and reserve one of the really affordable Milan airport shuttles and avoid the extortionately expensive taxis. Companies such as Shuttle Direct offer shared shuttle services to keep the costs low, but the quality of service remains high. Their local drivers are a wealth of information for all the best things to see and do in magnificent Milan.

Lukas Johannes is a driver for Shuttle Direct, the number one provider of shared and private airport transfers all over Europe and northern Africa. If you’re looking for affordable Milan airport shuttles, Lukas and his colleagues can make sure that you and your luggage get to and from the airport swiftly and safely.
