So, you’ve landed your dream property in the Algarve or elsewhere in the world, and now’s the stage when it gets really scary – the packing process. But if you prefer to do it all yourself, what are the things that we would advise you to do? 1 Put like with like It’s a good idea to place items of a similar size, shape and weight together. Lampshades, for example, tend to fit inside each other, while light bulbs are probably best wrapped carefully and placed together – in their original boxes if possible – in a larger carton marked ‘Extra Fragile’. 2 Remember that a lot of things can be filler There’s always the need to have soft filler in boxes, such as between two sensitive items to prevent them colliding into and potentially damaging each other, but it’s not just bubble wrap that could potentially do the trick. What about those awkward clothes that don’t fit neatly into any other container, or those other random blankets, pillows and stuffed toys? 3 Prioritise boxes before any other containers Sure, you may have some old suitcases or ‘bags for life’ that you reckon would be perfect for saving you from buying cartons, but just think how difficult it will be to pack all of those differently shaped containers into the back of a van. Boxes have remained a perennial packing favourite down the generations for good reason – not least because they are so easy to stack. 4 Pack heavier items into smaller boxes You’ll probably emphasise with this tip if you’ve ever walked home from the supermarket carrying one large bag full of light items, and one small bag full of heavy items. The latter is still easily the heaviest, so if you’ve got hefty items like books to pack, we’d advise you to place them into smaller, easier-to-handle boxes. Organise your books by size so that you make the most efficient use of the space in each carton. 5 Pack dishes on edge, not stacked It might be a surprising thing to learn, but dishes are less likely to be broken in transit if they are packed on edge instead of stacked on top of each other. However, bear in mind that a large amount of padding – at the top, bottom and sides of the box – will still be needed. Packing may seem a fairly self-explanatory, common-sense endeavour, but in reality, it so often isn’t for many of us.
