My friend Mathew had his ancestral home in the country. When we were kids, it was our favorite place for adventure in summer. On such a summer holiday, venturing in the nooks and corners of this old house, we discovered a place that we had never seen before. It was the wine cellar of that house. The next day, Mathew’s father had taken us in the cellar to show what magical place it was. Since we were kids and never tasted the crisp fine wine, we didn’t understand the appeal of it. But, nevertheless, the charm of this ancient wine cellar blew our mind. Barrels of wine and bottles that dated back to late 18th century just mesmerized us completely. And after starting my career as an architect, when I got the assignment of restoring that wine cellar, I was even ecstatic. Apart from the flood of memories of my first visit in the wine cellar, now, I noticed one thing more during my site visit. Old wine and the environment of such a grand cellar in the basement of the house have their own stories to tell. Obviously, the modern homes in cities are deprived of that. So, if anyone is blessed with such a place in their home, then it will be a wise move for them to opt for wine cellar restoration. Remember, this will not only let you preserve your finest wine and help them age, but also increase the value of the house too. If you are planning for your ancient wine cellar repair, then there are few things that you need to attend first. What are those factors? Then take a look at the following points that I am going to discuss. Speaking from experience, these factors will surely help you in restoration. Think of the Floor and Fix It In the case of old wine cellars, it is the floor that often gets really affected. It is necessary that you pay attention to its condition. If you are thinking of giving it a touch of modernity, make sure that you replace the floor to a more functional one. Think of waterproofing the floor and replace the old bricks with new tiles. It will add a contemporary glamour to your wine cellar. Racks and Cooling Units The biggest challenge that I faced in restoring the wine cellar at Mathew’s ancestral home was that, it had built-in shelves and they were in terrible condition. Obviously, they were not in the right state to bear the weight of the bottles. So for that, we opted for wooden sturdy racks. It not only complemented the vintage feel of the place, but was also a good choice. To create the right atmosphere for wine preservation and aging, adding a wine cellar cooling unit is necessary. Often basements are stuffy, not too cold or dry to provide the right atmosphere. The cooling unit takes care in such situations. Door The old door of the cellar was certainly not equipped to prevent the elements from outside in the room. So, I opted for a wooden door along with a wrought iron gate for the cellar. The result of this experiment was splendorous. The old ancient cellar looked like a young decked up custom wine room, but with the uncanny old world charm. So, now when you know how you can make your old cellar a new and modern one, don’t waste more time. Hire a company and let them take care of your cellar. Remember, having an old cellar is like having a treasure trove. Author Bio: Jim Brown is a famous architect and expert in wine cellar repair and restoration.
